Bath bombs are little colorful balls of fizz that are made of baking soda, Epsom salt, essential oils (for scent) and dye (for color). Most of us have heard of these little balls of bath delight. Both children and adults love adding them to their bath water. This is a little spin on that idea. Have you ever heard of seed bombs or garden bombs?
Just like bath bombs add a splash of color to your bathwater, seed bombs add a splash of color to your garden! You can buy them online or from a specialty store. They are also very easy to make!
Seed bombs can be made a few different ways. You can make them with a natural clay and compost mixture, or you can use colored paper. For this tutorial, we are going to use colored paper.
Ingredients:
Several sheets of colored paper
Flower seeds that do well in your area
Water
Tools:
Food processor or blender
Large Bowl
Strainer
Sponge or rag
Mold (optional)
Instructions:
1.) Tear up your paper into small pieces and place it into a blender or food processor. You can use scrap paper or purchase paper for this purpose. If you want the bombs to be a certain color, be sure to use the same colored paper. Too many combinations of colors will likely result in bombs that are grey or brownish.
2.) Add hot water - the paper should be covered. Let it sit for approximately 10 minutes.
3.) Blend for a few minutes until the paper turns into a pasty mixture
4.) Remove the paper mix and place it in the strainer, over a bowl to allow excess water to strain out.
5.) Fold in a packet of seeds
6.) Take a sponge or rag and press out additional moisture.
7.) Press the mix into your mold or roll into small, meatball-sized balls.
8.) Let the bombs dry for 24 to 48 hours. DO NOT BAKE
When the seed bombs are dry, you can arrange them into a bag to give as a gift. If you want to keep them for your own garden, head out back and toss them in your yard. These are also fun for kids to toss and watch grow!
